How Construction Contractors Benefit Under Trump's New $3.4 Trillion Budget

President Trump’s recently signed $3.4 trillion federal budget brings substantial benefits for construction contractors, along with a few setbacks.

President Trump’s newly signed $3.4 trillion federal budget delivers notable benefits for the construction industry while gaining concerns among clean energy contractor groups. The legislation extends valuable tax deductions, including Section 199A for pass-through businesses and an increased estate-tax exemption, offering financial relief and long-term stability to construction builders and contractors. Equipment purchases get a boost too, with 100% bonus depreciation permanently reinstated and the Section 179 cap raised to $2.5 million, supporting greater investment in machinery, trucks, and software.

Beyond equipment, the budget enhances workforce support by exempting overtime pay from federal income taxes and broadening education access through expanded Pell Grants and 529 savings accounts for technical training. Additionally, 100% Research and Development expensing was extended for full deductions on technologies like drones and building modeling, encouraging innovation within the field.

However, the budget didn’t meet all industry expectations. A proposed fee for electric and hybrid vehicles, meant to strengthen the Highway Trust Fund, was removed from the final bill. Also controversial are the phased rollbacks of clean-energy incentives, including tax credits for constructing renewable-energy facilities and retrofitting manufacturing plants for components like solar panels and battery cells.

Despite the mixed outcomes, contractor groups view the budget as a step forward, praising its efforts to shield businesses from looming tax hikes and equip them with the financial tools to grow and invest.
